ABOUT DMICS

Natural and human - made disasters and calamities have off - late been too frequent to cope with, globally. Their intensity is so high and occurrence is so often, that even developed countries face enormous challenges and difficulties to deal with the impact and the aftermath they leave on the World we live in.

A myriad of causes, most of them ever known earlier, are identified as the root cause of all the catastrophes. Earthquakes, Cyclones, Floods, Hailstorms, Landslides, Tornadoes, Thunderstorms, Hurricanes, Fire, Lightening, Epidemics, Contamination, Famine, Drought, Volcanic eruptions, Radiation, Road/Rail/ Aviation accidents, Civil unrest and Terrorism, just to name a few, create catastrophe and damage Our Mother Earth in all the forms of it%26apos;s existence.

The ever-growing population and their ever increasing demands are seen to be crippling the Earth%26apos;s capability to withstand the impact of the devastation caused by these disasters.

The magnitude of losses is generally infinite and is mostly irreversible during these catastrophes. These calamities have a disastrous effect on the human and economic development of the society. In recent times, there has been a steady rise in the incidence of major disasters and the consequential devastation and destruction of life and property.

The recently passed two decades of 1981 – 1990 and 1991 – 2000 have been witness to the holocausts which have seriously affected the sustainable development.

We are a country, described as a developed nation most vulnerable to natural disasters of medium to high intensity. While some 25, 000 human lives were reported to have been lost world over in the year 2001, which, according to a UN Report, is double the deaths that were reported in the previous year, India alone is said to have accounted for about 24 percent of them due to such tragedies.

The areas identified as being susceptible to disasters of different kinds in our country are:

» Coastal States - situated along the East Coast, in general and Gujarat - on the West Coast, in

specific, if it is cyclones;

» Approximately 70%25 of the net sown area is hit by droughts;
